Each pair of magnets is handmade in the motif of "Shisa," the ancient guardian god of Okinawa. Shisa is the name for the lion pronounced in the Okinawan dialect, and it is said that the lion culture was introduced from China.
It was believed that installing a lion in a village would prevent misfortune, and the practice spread throughout Okinawa.
These days, shisa are arranged in pairs. The male (blue) is on the right side with his mouth open, and the female (pink) is on the left side with her mouth closed. The male with his mouth open is said to bring in good luck, while the female with her mouth closed is said to keep evil spirits and misfortune out of the house, and to keep the good luck that does come in from escaping.
The magnet was covered on the Japanese TV.
